1973 - Coin of the Year -1973
United Kingdom 50 Pence
To celebrate its entry into the European Economic Community (E.E.C.), the United Kingdom issued a special commemorative fifty pence coin, with a reverse design of nine hands. The ninth hand is smaller than the other eight, and was intended to represent the female hand of the British queen, although at the time many people assumed the design was an error. Although this is not an impressive or beautiful coin, we think it deserves its place here as our 'coin of the year' for 1973.
The Vietman war ended, and the Yom Kippur war flared.
On September 15th King Gustav VI Adolf died, and Carl XVI Gustav became king.
On July 20 - Haakon Magnus, Crown Prince of Norway born.
The clocks stopped for W. H. Auden. on September 29th.
