1826 - Coin of the Year -1826
George IV 1826 Five Pound Piece
Although George IV came to the throne in 1820, it was not until 1826 that a £5 coin ws issued. This was part of a complete proof coin set issued in that year. During his eleven year reign, there were three different portraits used on his coins. The first was a laureate head used from 1820, the second was a bare head used only on the £2 coins of 1823, and the third was the bare head used from 1826 onwards. It was probably the most attractive of all three designs, and was the reason for the issue of the proof coin set. it was unusual that no proof set was issued in 1820 which was the first issue year of his coinage.
King Charles XV of Sweden and Norway was born on May 3rd.
