Louis XVI on Obverse of 1786 Louis D'or
|
1786 - Coin of the Year -1786
French Gold Louis D'or
Frederick II of Prussia (Frederick the Great) died and was succeeded by Frederick Wiliam (Friedrich Wilhelm) II on 17th August. As we don't have a Prussian coin of that year, we have chosen instead a French coin of Louis XVI.
Louis XVI was an absolute monarch who represented all the excesses which lead to the disatisfaction which enabled and drove the French Revolution in 1789. The coin we show is a Louis D'or, a "Golden Louis", so even the coins in your pocket were called after the king!
