George II on Obverse of 1741 Crown

1741 - Coin of the Year -1741
Silver Crown of George II
In 1741 Elizabeth the Great became Czarina of Russia. As we can't find a Russian coin of that date, we chose to showcase a coin of George II of England.
We selected this magnificent crown simply because we liked it very much. It is the finest specimen of this coin we have ever seen. The portrait is the young bust of George II, and this was the last year it was used on crowns, after which an older portrait replaced it. The roses shown in alternate angles on the reverse denote that the silver was from the West of England mines. A crown was a five shilling coin.
