George II on Obverse of 1737 Shilling
|
1737 - Coin of the Year -1737
Silver Shilling of George II
No great event of international note appears to have happened in 1737. James Sobieski the Crown Prince of Poland, and Emperor Nakamikado of Japan both died in this year, but neither seem to have a great influene on history, besides we don't have any photographs of thier coins dated 1737.
We selected this magnificent coin simply because we liked it very much. The portrait is the young bust of George II, and this was the last year it was used on shillings, after which an older portrait replaced it. The roses and plumes shown in alternate angles on the reverse denote that the silver was from the "Company for Smelting Pit Coale and Sea Coale"
