1733 - Coin of the Year -1733
Manx Halfpenny
The coin we have selected to represent 1733 is a halfpenny from the Isle of Man. This small island off the Lancashire Coast has had its own Parliament for over 1,000 since 979 AD. One side shows a falcon and the motto "SANS CHANGER" (without change), belonging to James Stanley, the Earl of Derby and the Lord of Mann. The reverse design is a three legged device, known as a triune or triskellion, and the Latin inscription QUOCUNQUE JECERIS STABIT, meaning wherever you throw me, I will land, which is the motto of the Island.
