Wiliam III on Obverse of 1698 Halfcrown
|
1698 - Coin of the Year -1698
William III Halfcrown
After the death of his wife Mary in 1694, William continued as sole ruler of the United Kingdom until 1702. We selected this silver halfcrown to represent this date in history purely because we liked its superb condition.
1698 appears to have been a particularly uneventful year. Colin Maclaurin, a Scottish Mathematician was born, Ernst August, Duke of Brunswick - Lüneburg died, and Tani Jinzan, astronomer and calendar scholar, observed a fire destroy Tosa (now Kochi) in Japan at the same time as a Leonid Meteor storm, taking it as evidence to reinforce belief in the "Theory of Areas".
