William and Mary 1689 Halfcrown
Although William & Mary accepted the English crown in 1688 after the abdication of James II on January 11th, no coins were issued in their names until 1689. They were proclaimed joint rulers of Great Britain on February 13th, but were not recognised by Scotland until their coronation on April 11th, and not by Ireland until the next year. The conjoined portraits make their coins very attractive, in our opinion, especially in higher grades. Mary died on December 28th 1694, and William continued as sole ruler until 1702.
The English Bill of Rights and the Scottish Claim of Right were both enacted in 1689 as part of the negotiation between the British government and William and Mary, as was also the Coronation Oath.
