Oliver Cromwell on Obverse of Silver Crown
|
1658 - Coin of the Year -1658
Silver Crown of Cromwell
Oliver Cromwell died in 1658, so this was the last year in which coins were iisued during his "reign". It was also only the second year in which Cromwell's portrait appeared on coins. Cromwell had always resisted calls for him to become king, but acted more like one towards the end of his "reign". All coins with Cromwell's head are quite rare. The design on the reverse is a crowned shield, around the edge is the inscription 1658 PAX QUAERITUR BELLO (Peace is sought by war).
