Oliver Cromwell on Obverse of Gold Broad
|
1656 - Coin of the Year -1656
Gold Broad of Cromwell
1656 was the only year in which a gold broad coin was issued, and OliverCromwell's portrait started to appear on coins. Cromwell had always resisted calls for him to become king, but acted more like one towards the end of his "reign". All coins with Cromwell's head are quite rare. The design on the reverse is a crowned shield, around the edge is the inscription 1656 PAX QUAERITUR BELLO (Peace is sought by war).
Edmund Halley was born in 1656.
