1643 - Coin of the Year -1643
Gold Triple Unite of Charles I
In the English Civil War, 1643 saw Royalist victories at the battles of Roundway Down, and Adwalton Moor. Our triple unite (three pounds) shows Charles holding a sword and laurel wreath. The reverse quote the Wellington Declaration "RELIGIO PROTESTANTIUM, LEGES ANGLIAE, LIBERTAS PARLIAMENTI" which he had made the previous year. Coins such as these were possibly produced and issued as presentation pieces perhaps given to loyal supporters.
The legend reads "EXURGAT DEUS ET DISSIPENTUR INIMICE EIUS", meaning "Let The Lord arise and his enemies be scattered".
