1567 - Coin of the Year -1567
James VI Silver Thirty Shillings, Ryal or Sword Dollar
James VI acceded to the throne of Scotland in 1567, so our featured coin, a silver thirty shillings, otherwise known as a sword dollar, or ryal, is very appropriate to illustrate a coin of this year. James later unified England and Scotland as James I of England, so he was also the last monarch for whom Scottish coins were issued. Although a number of modern coins retain Scottish themed designs, they are British coins with a Scottish design rather than Scottish coins.
