William I Silver Penny
Edward the confessor died on January 5th 1066, and his crown was disputed by William of Normandy and Harold II (Godwinson), and also by Harald Hardrada and Tostig. William defeated Harold at the famous Battle of Hastings, and England was changed from an Anglo-Saxon society into the beginnings of a more modern and better organised kingdom. William Duke of Normandy now became William I of England, possibly better known as William the conqueror, but also known as William the Bastard, but probably not within his earshot. Our photographs show an English silver penny of William I.
